The end?
December 21, 2012 will anything ever happen?
Or will it be just another "Thank God It's Friday"?

There is zero scientific evidence that anything will happen, but there are numerous things that could easily threaten the human species in the year 2012, such as a geomagnetic reversal, asteroid strike or supernova. Or something more intimate, like a flu pandemic, or a nuclear war.

2008 May 3, Myanmar: Cyclone Nargis hits the Irrawaddy Delta and the city of Yangon, killing about 78,000 people. Most of the deaths and destruction were caused by a 12-foot-high tidal wave that formed during the storm. Cyclone Nargis is the worst natural disaster since the tsunami in 2004.

2008 May 12, China: over 67,000 people die and hundreds of thousands more are injured when a 7.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Sichuan, Gansu, and Yunnan Provinces in western China. Nearly 900 students are trapped when Juyuan Middle School in the Sichuan Province collapses from the quake.

2009 September 30, Indonesia: a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hits the island of Sumatra, leaving more than 1,000 people dead and thousands trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings in the city of Padang.

2009 December, H1N1 pandemic. Total reported infected cases 1,483,520. Total reported death 25,174.

2010, January 12, Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- Rescue workers struggled to clear rubble and bodies from the streets of Haiti's "flattened" capital, where a government official said the death toll from Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake may exceed 212,000 and left more than 1 million victims homeless.

2010 February 27, As the sun set in Chile on Saturday, a picture of the immense structural damage wrought by an early morning 8.8 -magnitude earthquake had come clearly into focus, with the nation's president estimating that 2 million people had been affected in some way. More than 300 were killed.

2010 April 15, Unstable bridges and collapsed roadways kept rescuers and their heavy equipment away Thursday from Jiegu, China -- the town nearest the epicenter of a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that killed 760 people and 11,477 more were injured when the tremor hit Yushu county early on Wednesday.

In the news today -

H1N1 flu is back. Many cases reported. Warnings issued. Please take precautionary steps.

Volcanic ash over Europe's airspace.
Non-emergency flights in Britain were cancelled and most will stay grounded. Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Belgium also closed their airspace.

France shut down 24 airports, including the main hub of Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Germany’s Berlin and Hamburg were shut last night and several flights out of the US had to double back.

Kyla Evans, spokeswoman for air traffic service Eurocontrol, said half of all transatlantic flights were expected to be cancelled today.

She said the ash had led to the cancellation of about 4,000 flights within Europe yesterday, which could rise to 6,000 today.

A volcano beneath Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier began erupting on Wednesday for the second time in less than a month, triggering floods and shooting smoke and steam miles into the air.
